Crypto Pump and Dump: How Token Buyers Get Trapped

Crypto Pump and Dump: How Token Buyers Get Trapped

A new token is flying. A Telegram group is buzzing, influencers are posting rocket emojis and the chart only goes up. You buy in. Hours later the price collapses and the promoters have vanished. This is a pump and dump. Here is how these schemes work, the warning signs and what you can do after a loss.

Warning signs

  • ✗ A countdown to a pump time in a group chat
  • ✗ Promises that the token will 10x or 100x
  • ✗ Anonymous developers and no clear project
  • ✗ Most tokens held by a few wallets
  • ✗ Liquidity that is not locked
  • ✗ You cannot find a way to sell in a test

Check a token before you buy

Look up the token contract on the network explorer, such as Etherscan or BscScan. Check how many holders there are and how much the top wallets hold. Look for audits from known firms and whether liquidity is locked. Search the token name with the words scam and rug pull on Google, Bing, YouTube and TikTok.

After a loss

  1. Save the token contract address, your purchase transactions and the group messages.
  2. Screenshot the promotions, including influencer posts.
  3. Note the group name, admins and any wallet addresses shared.
  4. Report to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), FTC ReportFraud, Action Fraud or your local police.
  5. Report the group and accounts on the platforms involved.

Can you get money back?

Losses from pure market crashes are hard to recover. But where the token was a deliberate fraud, such as a honeypot or rug pull, reports and on chain evidence can help investigators follow the funds and identify the people behind it. Several regulators have taken action against promoters of pump and dump schemes.

Avoid the next one

Never buy because a group says now. Wait a day, check the contract and ask who benefits if you buy. If the answer is the people telling you to buy, walk away.

Beware of the recovery pitch

After a big crash, token groups are often flooded with messages from people offering to recover lost funds or to swap your worthless tokens for real ones if you pay a small fee first. These are the same groups trying again. No one can swap a dead token back into money for a fee.

Is buying a new token always a scam?

No, but new tokens carry very high risk, and many are designed to trap buyers.

The influencer was famous. Are they responsible?

Paid promotion without disclosure can break the law in some countries. Report it.

Red flags in token groups

Watch how the group behaves. Admins who delete questions, ban people who ask about selling, or post the same hype message over and over are protecting a pump, not a project. Real projects answer hard questions in public. If you are told that doubters are fudders or haters, you are being told not to think.

How a pump and dump works

  1. Insiders create or buy a cheap token early.
  2. They hype it through groups, paid influencers and fake news.
  3. New buyers push the price up.
  4. Insiders sell their tokens at the top.
  5. The price crashes and late buyers are left holding almost worthless tokens.
